Description

The PCS Edventures Discover Robotics & Programming Kit is a one-of-a-kind collection combining both exceptional curriculum and high-quality mechanical building pieces. The robotics curriculum is a platform that teaches basic programming logic in the context of mechanical output, which allows students to gain integral 21st century skills like creative problem-solving as well as thinking logically and critically. This cross-curricular technique also aligns with various national and international teaching standards including the following: Common Core, International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) and Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).

By combining a game-like programming interface and real mechanical robotic components, the Discover Robotics & Programming Kit is one of the most versatile and useful teaching tools of today. Projects focus on the integration of STEAM skills by incorporating math, physics and engineering principles. Each project is followed with an optional journaling component to fuse language arts and reflection, in response to extensive research that illustrates the benefits of including reflective elements in STEM classrooms.

With Discover Robotics & Programming students have the freedom to iterate and design, while gaining tangible benefits from frequent analysis and reflection. Individual Discover Robotics & Programming kits are meant to be used with 1-3 students. Each level within the student-driven series focuses on different concepts and are clearly aligned for specified age ranges, allowing educators to implement the most appropriate activities in their classrooms which are also engaging, fun and educational!

Classroom Pack: 
The Discover Robotics & Programming Classroom Pack includes 16 individual kits, which are stored in a high-quality hardwood furniture case with rolling casters. Each kit, is meant to be used with 1-3 students, so the Classroom Pack can be utilized with groups of 16-48 students! In addition, the Classroom Pack comes with a special Robotics Challenge Guide for additional ideas and guidance when attempting local or national robotics competitions.

Classroom Curriculum vs LAB Cards

Discover Robotics & Programming is an extremely versatile kit which can be used in a variety of educational environments. When choosing to purchase the kit, there are two options for curriculum which can be paired with the physical building manipulative: the Classroom Curriculum or the LABCards Curriculum.

Classroom Curriculum:

This option was developed specifically for classroom use, and therefore is called the Classroom Curriculum. In this bound book are projects, challenges and design activities suitable for students in grades 6-8. The Classroom version booklet, meant for 1-3 students, progresses through four different levels, each of which includes journaling components and a variety of assessment options for teachers to choose from.

LABCards Curriculum:

This curriculum is unique in the fact that is can be utilized with younger students in grades 4-8, and is extremely student-driven. This option also comes with four different levels of cards, and each level includes 5 cards. With a total of 20 cards full of activities, challenges and design activities, the LABCards can be used in after-school programs or other educational settings that require curricular flexibility. Each set of LABCards can be used by individual students, or used in small groups to encourage collaborative skills.

Brain Controller Pack

The Brain robotic controller from PCS Edventures! offers students the opportunity to learn about robotics like never before. With quick processing power, wireless connectivity, and physical sensors, the Brain is used with the Cortex programming environment to create a comprehensive hands-on robotics education experience.

With physical hooks that are easily adaptable to LEGO and fischertechnik parts, students can build to their imagination’s content. Then, using the Cortex, students program desired movement and watch their creations come to life!

      LABCARDS
      In student-driven classrooms, after-school programs, or home learning environments, enable students to track their progress towards concept mastery with our LABCards point system! Each LABCard was formatted to include 2 project-based lessons, 2 challenges, and 1 final design project. Students earn 5 points for each card they successfully complete. Each level includes four 5-point cards and culminates with a 5-point end design project, for a total of 25 points per level. By completing all four levels, students can earn up to 100 points! 

      With the use of the PCS LABCards, educators can take advantage of a differentiated instruction model where challenging concepts are broken down so that students can quickly master skills and move at their own pace towards a final performance task design project. Each LABCard is assigned a point value for quick and easy assessment of progress through each level and to provide students with immediate recognition of their accomplishments.

      The LABCard approach is intended to provide educators with a tool that enables a more student-directed experience. Educators are more empowered to provide more facilitation, coaching and mentoring as students work independently, in their own fashion.           Alignments

          The BrickLAB Classroom set was developed by PCS Edventures to bring Common Core subjects to life for students, and to help teachers improve test scores. It is aligned with standards set by the following education associations: International Technology and Engineering Educators Association (ITEEA), National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) and the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE).

          The standards laid out by the ITEEA are concerned with technological literacy including how students develop an understanding of what technology is, how it affects the environment, its impact on the human race and the wide array of technologies used in industries today. In a technologically reliant society, the ITEEA stresses 21st Century understanding of the evolution of technology and how it has the ability to shape the future.

          The NCTM is a devoted association which developed one of the first rigorous set of standards which emphasizes college and career readiness in the 21st Century. The group realizes the effectiveness of a program is heavily reliant upon careful organization when assessing and teaching students mathematics, and has therefore set forth good practices for teachers, administrators and parents to create a powerful mathematics education.

          Focusing on the ten themes of social studies, the NCSS standards have laid out standards to support and teach these themes, which include: 1) culture; 2) time, continuity and change; 3) people, places and environments; 4) individual development and identity; 5) individuals, groups and institutions; 6) power, authority and governance; 7) production, distribution and consumption; 8) science, technology and society; 9) global connections; and 10) civic ideals and practices. The NCSS highlights the importance of what they call “civic competence” and how to instill it in future generations.

          Finally, the NCTE has developed a series of Guiding Visions in addition to their list of standards which help all students have the opportunity and resources to develop adequate language skills to be successful in life. The association believes that literacy growth begins before children start school and should be diversified with a mixture of activities beyond reading and writing. Their standards are meant to facilitate innovation and creativity which are essential to teaching and learning Language Arts.

          As evident, the standards used to develop BrickLAB Classroom are extensive and subject diverse. It is one of the most sophisticated and versatile educational tools which can be utilized at the elementary and middle school levels.

          Engineering

          Students become budding architects in this unit as they explore basic architectural elements like the post and lintel and cantilever. Understanding the basics is extremely important when designing structures, and history is also covered to show how long architecture has been used and why it is integral to the success of a society. Greek temples and Egyptian pyramids are studied for their structural finesse and ability to withstand time. Additionally, proper nomenclature is always used in PCS Edventures curriculum, so architectural terminology is introduced as new concepts are covered. Learn about why architecture continues to grow and develop not only as a science but as an art form with this unique construction engineering unit!

          Math

          By diving into manipulative-based concepts such as geometry and statistics, students are able to use their hands to get more involved with math! They explore cubes, circles, pi, tesselations, measurement and so much more in this interactive math-filled unit. Correct terminology is also reinforced to aid students with memory recall of math concepts. Whether students enjoy math, or struggle with grasping concepts, the STEM foundations math unit helps students of all abilities see math in a whole new light and mathematics becomes more hands-on than ever before with this engaging unit!

          Communications

          In an increasingly digital world, communication skills are more important than ever and have become a highly sought after 21st Century Skill. In this unit students must put their current communication skills to the test in order to improve them! Activities require students to follow specific instructions, communicate with precision and use technology to communicate with semaphore and braille systems. One can never have too much experience or practice in the communication arena, so this unit is a beneficial addition to any classroom!

          Physics

          Force and motion are studied in this unit by giving students the opportunity to experiment with the different types. Newton’s laws of motion, the work formula and the effects of friction are also studied with engaging, experiential activities that would make anyone want to become a physicist! Students are also challenged to examine and relate scientific topics to the world around them using scientific vocabulary, specific to the physical sciences. Get moving and shaking with this exciting unit!

          Alignments

          In the foreward of their document Standards for Technological Literacy, the International Technology and Engineering Educators Association (ITEEA) describes the need for up and coming generations to have an understanding and appreciation of technology. The ITEEA wrote “we are a nation increasingly dependent on technology. Yet, in spite of this dependence, U.S. society is largely ignorant of the history and fundamental nature of the technology that sustains it. The result is a public that is disengaged from decisions that are helping share its technological future,” (2007). In response to this apparent need for technological literacy in today’s society, The PCS Edventures BrickLAB STEM Foundations set was developed specifically around the standards laid out by the ITEEA.

          The ITEEA began with a broad definition of what technology is: “technology is how people modify the natural world to suit their own purposes.” From there, they developed a set of age-appropriate standards, which outline what concepts should be instilled to develop a sense of technological understanding as students progress. Additionally, it is apparent that there is a vast difference between what technology education entails versus educational technology. Many schools utilize technology in education, but fail to dive into the origins of technology and how it developed with the human race and continues to evolve with us into the future.

          In response to this publication and its findings, PCS Edventures decided to develop a curriculum series which directly addressed the concerns laid out by the ITEEA. The BrickLAB STEM Foundation series focuses on recent research which shows that many students learn best from experiential learning. Bricks are utilized to “provide opportunities for students to demonstrate their understanding of technology and its value to them and society,” (2007, 19). With engaging Project-Based Learning activities, BrickLAB STEM Foundations instills a deep understanding of the world of technology!
