The Truth About Summer "Break"

The Truth About Summer "Break"

Ah, summer break—the promise of relaxation, adventure and personal growth. We all envision long, lazy days spent by the pool or on vacation, catching up on hobbies and rejuvenating for the upcoming school year. But let’s face it, the reality often looks a bit different. Our calendars are often packed with professional development, extra-curricular activities, back-to-school planning and summer jobs. Before you know it, back-to-school time is just around the corner.

No matter what your “summer break” looks like this year, it is possible to find a balance between relaxation and productivity. Use these simple tips to ensure that you find a few precious moments to reset for the upcoming school year.

  • Exercise! You can go to a class at your local gym, take a morning walk, a bike ride or buddy up with some friends to keep your body moving.
  • Read a new book. Take a trip to the library and choose a novel for yourself.
  • Stretch. Look up a couple of stretches to loosen up and improve your focus.
  • Drink a cup of green tea on the porch. Both drinking green tea and spending time in nature are proven ways to reduce stress in your life.
  • Declutter one room at a time. Living in a cleaner space reduces stress and helps keep your mind clear.
  • Rest up! Getting adequate sleep is essential to your physical, mental and emotional health. It's easy to stay in go-mode all summer, but this is a time for you to sleep in and take some naps.
  • Enjoy your favorite TV show. Comedies, dramas, documentaries, reality TV — take some time to watch your favorite shows. During the school year, it's hard to stay up-to-date with your favorite characters. Now is your chance to catch up!
  • Practice mindfulness. Whatever your focus this summer, take time for introspection. Practice gratitude by writing down things you are thankful for.
  • Allow space to plan. Although you may want to abandon all thoughts of school for the summer, some planning will set you up for success. Reflect on last year, brainstorm new activities and research engaging resources. This will make your upcoming year rich and rewarding.
