Enter virtual reality in style! Offering a unique opportunity to learn and explore, Blocksmith Education comes with 12 one-hour lessons in programming and video game design. Using the Blocksmith Builder software, learners create 3D games and scenarios, bringing them to life through an extensive logic system. These creations can be played immediately, or uploaded to Virtual- and Augmented Reality viewing devices. With the Blocksmith Education license, instructors have full domain control to create a secure and distraction-free environment to trade and share experiences. A fun and exciting journey for students and educators alike, Blocksmith allows learning environments of all sizes to create, share and experience the wide world of video game design and virtual reality.
Tech requirements: one device per student (digital curriculum is compatible with Internet-connected Macs, PC’s, iPads, Android tablets and Chromebooks.) While VR devices are not required, files created in Blocksmith can be viewed on common headsets, such as Cardboard, Daydream, Windows MR, HTC Vive and Oculus Rift.

Does my Blocksmith Education license need to be renewed each year?
No, your Blocksmith Education license is a perpetual license. The private subdomain, administrator account, student accounts, device licenses and integrated digital quest curriculum are all included in the one-time license fee. Premium versions of the software may become available in the future for an annual fee, but an ad-free space is included for free for the first year.
How many student accounts are included in the license?
As many as you want! All Blocksmith Education licenses come with unlimited student accounts. With the Makerspace License, 10 devices can be linked to your unique domain. The Camp license supports up to 30 devices, and the Site license includes an unlimited number of device installations.
Why don't you use AR instead of VR as an educational tool?
We use both! The Blocksmith Builder has a couple specific features that help make experiences AR compatible. Our viewer apps for iOS support ARkit and our Android viewer support ARcore. We are going to publish an update to those next week. If you want into our closed beta feel free to send us an email address.
We have support for the HoloLens and will support Magic Leap when it comes out.
While both are based on 3D content, VR and AR are two very different paradigms, and we invite our users to explore them both. We even support cross-platform play between the two, so we hope someone will settle the ultimate question of VR vs. AR soon!
Are there games which are too violent? We find some curriculum out there related to 3D/VR include killing or blood. If there are games that include that in the curriculum, can we disable that curriculum, or tweak the curriculum?
We took great care to not do this with the curriculum — dodgeball is the most "intense" game we have in the curriculum. The curriculum cannot be altered, but instructors can make their own, and all other content can be imported as they want. We do not review content on our main platform by design. But school domains only see what educators pull in for:
- experiences/games (starts empty)
- marketplace (starts empty)
- curriculum (starts with Blocksmith 12h curriculum, educators decide to distribute this automatically to all their students or manually to individuals)
Is Blocksmith compatible with Merge Goggles and Merge Mini Goggles?
As far as we know, Merge solutions are based on Cardboard so yes, Blocksmith is compatible. Feel free to search for "Blocksmith" in Google Play (needs to be in quotation marks on some versions of Google Play) and test the free Blocksmith Viewer app and its VR mode with the devices.
