Join us as we explore 2019's top pics for STEAM curriculum programming, learn about our 2020 new product release of Plants and Seeds (tunnel books) and Drone Designers (exploring careers) and listen in on the conversation among our STEAM educator panel as they talk about their experience running STEAM programs and share best practices. The panel will talk about how STEAM has made a difference for students and in their learning environments, find out how they select quality curriculum and get valuable tips that have helped them run a successful program.

Who's on?

Sonia Galaviz will be this event's moderator. She is a 5th-grade teacher and STEM Coordinator at Garfield Elementary and teaches as an adjunct faculty for University of Phoenix and Boise State University in Boise, ID. In 2009 she received the honor of Idaho Woman of the Year from the Idaho Business Review. In 2011 Sonia was one of five educators in the nation chosen to receive an award in Excellence in Culturally Responsive Pedagogy from Teaching Tolerance. Sonia serves on the state board for the Idaho Education Association and works with PCS to test curriculum and share STEM education best practices with other educators.

Sonia will be joined by:

Kim Turner has been teaching for nearly 30 years. Currently, a 4th and 5th grade gifted teacher in Liberty, MO. She has taught 28 years. Last year, she and her gifted team were named "Innovator of the Year" in Liberty Public Schools. Additionally, Kim's class placed (twice) 5th place in the Burns Mcdonnell Battle of the Brains STEM Competition. Over 800 proposals were submitted to each competition cycle in 2017 and 2019. This award secured $10,000 STEM grants each time to purchase STEM supplies for her students. In addition to being a life-long learner and lover of education, Kim is happily married to Tom for 28 years, mom to 3 children and Oma to 3 grandchildren.

Nikki Servatius is a high school math and computer science teacher at Pathways In Education in Nampa, ID. Formerly the director of PCS EdventuresLAB running the after-school programs. She's led the STEM in the Sky- a session geared towards educating participants on drones, highlighting the potential applications of UAVs in the classroom. Nikki has taken her love for STEM into the classroom to reach more students. When she isn’t teaching, she spends her time being active outside or curled up with her cat and a good book.

Melanie Schrader is the Gifted and Talented Facilitator at Wood River Middle School in Hailey, ID. She has also taught life science, biology, chemistry, and microbiology in Meridian and Nampa. She spent three years abroad in Japan teaching English part-time. In May 2015, she earned a Master's of Science in Special Education - Gifted, Talented, and Creative. She is a Boise State graduate with a Biology Education degree. While at BSU, she was a 4-year track and field scholarship athlete, earning an All-American Award for Strength and Conditioning. She has two teenagers, cats, and enjoys fitness and cooking activities in her spare time.
