How Does the Junior Science Wizard Program Work?

Junior Science Wizards are students in the 5th-12th grades who learn to present science concepts to other students and the public using WizKits. The Junior Science Wizards not only learn and involve themselves in the science "magic" they are presenting, but involve other students by performing interactive science demonstrations.

Introduction:
There is a saying: "If you tell me - I will forget. If I read it - I will remember. If you involve me - I will understand". The Junior Science Wizard (J-SciWiz) program empowers students to understand better as they teach others. Within three hours, using Effective Education's unique WizKits™ and training methods, the students become involved and begin presenting their "science magic" to younger students, putting them on the "I understand" track. Benefits of the Program:

  • Increases academic achievement and test scores
  • Redirects student energies into positive channels
  • Enhances self-confidence and positive self-esteem
  • Develops leadership and cooperative learning skills
  • Improves English and communication skills
  • Provides for Service Learning and giving back to the community
  • Supports Whole School Reform
  • Increases employability skills
  • Increases school safety by improving school climate
Target Population:
The Junior Science Wizards are normally 6th graders and higher, including high school, yet it involves the whole K-12 population. It is suitable for regular schools, charter schools, alternative schools, after-school, science clubs, summer camps, boys and girl scout programs, Communities In Schools, 4H and similar programs. Ideally, it involves the educational institutes and the community.

How does it work?
An initial group of 5-10 students is selected to be the first Junior Science Wizards. They receive an initial training of three hours on several of Effective Education's WizKits™. They learn how to use the kits and how to do hands-on, inquiry-based magical presentations. Following this, either on the same day or the following day, the J-SciWiz start practicing their presentation in front of other students or classes. They continue this process, becoming better every time they present. They then perform these presentations to other audiences such as: parents, boards of education, after-school programs, malls, museums, children's hospitals and more.

After three months, when they have mastered the first few kits, they learn a few more kits. Additionally, they help train the next group of Junior Science Wizards. This way, the pool of active J-SciWiz increases.
